Safety & Environment

We are working to understand the impacts, provide information and consistently improve our operations

Fresh water is one of the world’s most precious resources, and one that we must all share, conserve and protect. We have made strides to conserve water in our shale development activities, but we believe that more can be done in this area.
Water is used in the process of hydraulic fracturing, and there is a lot of information available on the Internet and through popular media about the effect of hydraulic fracturing practices on surrounding ground water. Some of this information has generated questions, and we are working closely with our suppliers in the hydraulic fracturing process to understand the impacts, provide information and consistently improve our operations.

How we’re doing: shale operations

We manage well integrity throughout well design, construction and operation of our sites:

  • We follow stringent, wellbore casing techniques that meet or exceed industry guidelines designed to protect freshwater, and we monitor our practices and strive for continuous improvement in each well program.
  • We look for opportunities to use ‘produced water’ (water that flows back through the wellbore to the surface) by storing and reusing it in future wells.

Hydraulic fracturing - What we’re doing

Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is used to create fractures that extend from a wellbore drilled into targeted rock formations to optimize oil and natural gas recovery. With advances in hydraulic fracturing techniques came the realization that this technique can be used to unlock unconventional resource potential.

How we’re doing

Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc. publicly discloses the composition of fluids used on our wells during the hydraulic fracturing process. We provide this information by well location, and include chemical classifications, volumes, chemical concentrations and MSDS information used by our contractors.

The public can access the information we gather by registering with the organization on the FracFocus website. Providing this information is part of our commitment to open and transparent communications to communities and other stakeholders.
